Why Lemon Won Our Poll

aromas citrus sommelier Tasterplace

In our latest poll, we asked you to choose the citrus aroma that best represents summer. Among different shades of freshness, energy and vitality, one clear winner emerged: lemon.

The result made us reflect. Why lemon?

Perhaps because it is one of those rare aromas that speaks to everyone, regardless of passions, expertise or habits. You don't need to be a wine expert to recognize the scent of freshly grated lemon zest. You don't need to be a sommelier to associate it with a summer day, a walk by the sea, a refreshing drink shared with friends, or a homemade dessert. Lemon is one of those aromas that belongs to our memories even before it belongs to our sense of smell.

It is familiar.

It is immediate.

It is universal.

And this is probably why it earned first place.

An Aroma That Travels Across Different Worlds

When we think about aromas, we often associate them with a specific product.

In reality, aromas can travel through very different worlds. Lemon, for example, is commonly found in white wines, where it often expresses freshness, elegance and vibrancy.

We encounter it in extra virgin olive oil, alongside herbaceous and vegetal notes.

It appears in lighter and more aromatic beers.

It pairs surprisingly well with chocolate, creating contrasts that enhance both elements.

It plays a leading role in many fragrances we wear every day. And its blossoms, together with those of other citrus fruits, give rise to some of the most captivating scents nature has to offer.

Wine.

Olive oil.

Beer.

Chocolate.

Perfumes.

Flowers.

Different worlds, different languages, different experiences.

And yet a single aroma creates an invisible thread that connects them all.

More Than a Scent: Memories, Places and Music

But perhaps the real reason why lemon fascinates us goes beyond its fragrance.

Aromas have an extraordinary power: they can take us back in time.

Sometimes a simple citrus note is enough to evoke a specific place.

A terrace overlooking the sea.

A Mediterranean holiday.

A sunlit garden.

An open-air market on a summer morning.

A journey we thought we had forgotten.

And it is not only places that come back to life.

Aromas are often intertwined with the people we have met and the emotions we have experienced.

Even music can become part of the story.

A song heard during a trip.

A melody that accompanied a special evening.

A tune that still brings us instantly back to a precise moment in our lives.

More than any other sense, smell has the remarkable ability to create these invisible connections.

It does not simply describe what we perceive.

It helps us relive what we have experienced.

Knowing or Recognizing?

And this leads to an interesting question.

We are surrounded by the scent of lemon.

We have encountered it all our lives.

We instantly recognize it in our language and memories.

But would we truly recognize it blindfolded?

Could we distinguish it from bergamot? From citron? From lime? From grapefruit?

Very often, we believe we know an aroma simply because its name is familiar.

But knowing and recognizing are not the same thing.

Recognition requires attention.

Memory.

Curiosity.

Training.

It is an exercise that involves not only the nose, but also the mind and emotions.

Today, we invite you to explore aromas more broadly, through your memories, the places you have visited, the people you have met, and the music that accompanied those moments.

And perhaps this is precisely why lemon won our poll.

Not because it is simply an aroma, but because each of us finds a different story within it.

๐Ÿ‹ What about you?

What place, memory or song hides behind the scent of lemon?

Tell us your story.

This journey into the world of aromas starts again here: with a simple question, a familiar scent and the curiosity to discover what lies behind every sensation.

Because aromas are not only about what we smell.

They are also about who we are.
